The Battle en route to the second Death Star ended shortly after it began. It began when the assassin droid, IG-88A, intercepted an Imperial shuttle, carrying the Death Star's Computer Core. After destroying the shuttle's escort, IG-88 boarded the vessel. Onboard, IG-88's stormtrooper droids battled real stormtroopers on the shuttle. IG-88A was surprised to find Supervisor Gurdun who had overseen Project Phlutdroid, was in the bridge. When Gurdun told him that he should be gracious toward him, for commissioning his construction, IG-88 thanked him, then planted several explosives on the vessel, as his stormtroopers carried the core out, and downloaded its contents onto their modified core. As IG-88's identical shuttle rode away, the real shuttle exploded.

Stormtroopers of Death

Leia sends the Jedi Poe Huk and his apprentice Finn Tico on a secret mission to the village of Tuanul on the junk planet Jakku, to meet with the Resistance ally Bala Tik, who has obtained a map to Luke Skywalker's location. During the meeting, First Order stormtroopers under the command of the dark side force user Kylo Ren and Captain Phasma attack the village. Poe, Finn and their astromech droid BB-8 attempt to flee in their Jedi shuttle, but a pair of stormtroopers disable the engines with their blasters. With no alternative, Poe gives the map to BB-8 and orders him and Finn to flee. Poe remains behind to cover BB-8's escape.

Han and Chewbacca kill multiple stormtroopers, but are captured along with Finn by the First Order. However, Resistance T-70 X-wing starfighters and Jedi Assault Landers arrive to fight the First Order. A fierce dogfight ensues and results in the destruction of many First Order TIEs and the deaths of many stormtroopers from Jedi padawans. During the fighting at the castle, Finn kills five stormtroopers before he is overpowered by Captain Phasma. His life is narrowly saved by Poe, who is revealed to be alive and arrived along with the Jedi Assault Landers.

Seeing this, Han, Chewbacca, Finn, and Rey try to create an opening by planting thermal detonators inside the base. Sensing his father's presence, Kylo goes to meet Han. Han then confronts his son, Kylo Ren, calling to him by his birth name, "Ben". They approach each other on a bridge over a large pit, and Han pleads with his son to reject Snoke and return to the light side of the Force. Ben, removing his mask and seeming regretful and scared, holds out his lightsaber to Solo, asking for his father's help. Han replies that he would do anything for him, but when he tries to retract the lightsaber from Ben's hand, he resists. Ben then twists the angle of the hilt and ignites the weapon through Han's torso. Witnessed by Rey, Finn Poe, and Chewbacca, Han strokes his son's face for the last time, before falling to his death. Enraged, Chewbacca, and Rey start firing at Ren and the stormtroopers while Poe and Finn slice through troopers while they watch Ren escape. As the firefight rages, back on Yavin IV Leia has to sit down when she feels Han die through the Force, squeezing her eyes shut against the tears. Chewbacca injures Ren with his bowcaster, but Ren chases them out of the base and catches up to Finn, Poe and Rey in the forest.

The Resistance and Jedi order celebrates their victory while Leia, Chewbacca, and Rey mourn Han's death. R2-D2 suddenly awakens and reveals that he holds the map to Luke's location, with the only piece of the map missing being the one BB-8 was given by Poe. Together they complete the map and reveal the location of Ahch-To, the planet on which Luke Skywalker sought out the first Jedi Temple. Finn and Rey are supposed to be going to look for Luke. After Finn says goodbye to Adan and his unconcious master Poe, he goes with Rey and begind the search for Luke.
