Japan is becoming a new destination for International Students

For years, Indian students looking overseas have mostly aimed for the US, UK, Canada, and Australia. Now a quieter shift is happening in Asia: Japan is quickly turning into a serious study-abroad option for Indian students, driven by lower costs, industry-linked courses, and new government targets.

According to Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO), there were 279,274 international students in Japan as of May 1, 2023, a 20.8% increase over the previous year.

While Indian numbers are still small, the growth potential is large. Official estimates suggest there were around 1,600 Indian students in Japan as of May 2024, and Japan now aims to raise this to 15,000 within the next five years through scholarships, English-taught programs, and deeper university tie-ups with India.

At the same time, India’s overall outbound student population has crossed 1.8 million in 2025, underscoring how strongly Indian families are looking outside the country for higher education.

Japan Jumps from Niche to Top-Five Choice

AOEC India, which advises students on overseas education, says its own counselling data mirrors this shift.

According to internal figures shared by AOEC India for the 2021–2025 period:

  • Japan’s share of total student enquiries rose from about 2% in 2021 to nearly 9% in 2025.

  • The number of actual Japan applications handled by AOEC India increased from fewer than 20 in 2021 to over 120 in the 2024–25 cycle.

  • Among AOEC India’s Japan-bound students in 2024, around 60% chose STEM fields (engineering, IT, AI, robotics), 25% chose business and management, and 15% opted for language, design, or humanities programs.

An AOEC India counsellor explains that a few years ago Japan mainly came up in conversations for anime, gaming, or technology, but now students are asking detailed questions about course structure, job pathways, and Japanese work culture.

Why Japan Now Appeals to Indian Students

Several trends are working together to make Japan attractive:

  1. Rising costs in Western countriesWith tuition fees and living costs climbing in the US, UK, Canada and Australia, many middle-class Indian families are re-examining their options. The recent fall in the rupee has made dollar and pound destinations even more expensive for loan-funded students.

  2. Government push and talent gap in JapanJapan faces an ageing population and a shortage of skilled workers. To fill this gap, the government is actively inviting foreign talent, including from India, through easier pathways, industry-oriented programs and scholarships.

  3. More English-taught programsJapanese universities and professional colleges now offer a growing number of English-medium bachelor’s and master’s programs, especially in engineering, computer science, business, data science, robotics and sustainability. This lowers the entry barrier for Indian students who may not yet speak Japanese confidently.

  4. Scholarships and reasonable living costsCompared to some Western cities, living costs in many Japanese cities are still manageable for students, especially when combined with university scholarships and part-time work options. Education portals highlight that Japan pairs solid academic standards with relatively moderate tuition fees for many programs.

  5. Existing Indian community and support networkAs of December 2024, there were 53,974 Indian nationals living in Japan, concentrated mainly in Tokyo, Kobe, and Yokohama. This growing community, along with Indian restaurants, cultural groups and temples, makes the country feel more familiar to new students.

My business requires me to travel frequently, so I cannot be tied down to a desktop computer in an office. I needed remote bookkeeping solutions that allow me to access my financial dashboard from my phone. Whether I am at an airport or a client site, I can see exactly where my finances stand. This mobility is essential for my lifestyle and business model. Cloud-based bookkeeping is the only way I can stay organized while on the go.
